703 - Attacking a castle from WatHistory

Year Seven Castles Project

This information sheet can also be found at WatHistory on the Year7 Blog.

Hello Year 7,

This is a class project. We will present information about Castles two weeks after half term (07/03/14). This requires research over half term.

For the first lesson back (28/02/14) I need you to have researched the following about Norman Castles; ideally your research will involve visiting one of the many Norman Castles in Kent.

1. When and why Norman castles were built?
2. Whereabouts in England castles were built?
3. Who built castles?
4. What castles were originally used for?
5. An in depth study of a local Norman castles (Ideally with some pictures of you there!)
6. How did attacking Castles change?
7. How did Castles Defences change?

We will be presenting our information in Groups. You will have one lesson to work together to create a large poster, this will be presented and filmed. I would like you to build your own props with the assistance of your friends and families. We will have a Castle for which to demonstrate your ideas.

You will need to research some of the following;
Methods of Attack

Trebuchet
Siege Tower
Scaling Ladders
Battering Rams
Fire
Mine

Methods of Defence

Moats
Crenellations (battlements)
Round Towers (why was round better than square)
Bratticing
Machicolations
Gatehouse
Barbican
Drawbridge
Portcullises
Murder Holes
