AQA History of Medicine GCSE

Here are the lessons available for the Ancient period. We will examine how medical understanding developed from the prehistoric period through to the Egyptians, Greeks and the Romans and compare the developments in the West to the East. 

We will cover the following significant individuals and events.

01 - Egyptian Medicine

This lesson you will look at comparisons between Prehistoric Medicine and Egyptian Medicine. Just how similar or different are they? What factors led to the progress or regression?

02 - Ancient Greek Medicine

Today we will start looking at the medical developments of Ancient Greece and the factors that affected there development. You will look at the benefits and come to a conclusion, was this a period of progression or regression. 

03 - Hippocrates & Greece

This lesson will examine the role of Hippocrates as an individual. How did he affect medical developments? Does he deserve to be a significant individual in the History of Medicine course?

04 - Hippocrates & a balance.

Today's lesson will focus on giving a balanced opinion on the work of Hippocrates. What were the benefits but what were the limitations of Hippocrates work? 



05 - Roman developments in Medicine.

It's now time to move onto the Romans and examine their impact on the History of Medicine. How do they compare?

06 - Roman developments in Medicine.

Again we will look at the improvements that were made during the Roman period of History. 

How do they rank against the Greeks?
Did they really just steal all of their good ideas?
Did they follow Hippocrates?
Who is this Galen?

07 - Identifying Factors.

In this lesson we will be recapping the developments over time. What has changed since Pre-Historic medicine, is it a continued period of progression?


If so why? 
Can you identify different factors of change?
Have the these factors been responsible for progress or regression?

08 - Galen or Hippocrates.

This lesson will focus on exam techniques firstly. The second half of the lesson will focus on deciding who was more significant to the History of Medicine - Galen or Hippocrates. You will need to weigh up the evidence and come to a justified conclusion.

09 - The fall of the Roman Empire.

Today will focus on the assessing the impact of the fall of the Roman Empire. How did this significant historical event affect Europe? 

Why was this period known as the 'Dark Ages'?
How did medical knowledge change in this period?
For the better or for the worse?
